WHAT WE DO

Our Work

Translate Gender works to build communities that are more equitable and just for trans and gender creative individuals, especially youth. This work has been done hand in hand with family members and caregivers, nonprofit partners, and other individuals dedicated to the work of gender justice.

Our Mission

Translate Gender works to generate community accountability for individuals to self-determine their own genders and gender expressions.

Our History

Founding and Early Initiatives (2006)

  • Origins:

Translate Gender began in 2006 as a volunteer initiative to create a more equitable environment for trans and gender-creative individuals, particularly youth.

  • The Inclusion Initiative:

A key early component was the Inclusion Initiative, launched to address anti-discrimination issues at historically women's colleges. This initiative focused on providing training and advocacy for institutions to create more inclusive spaces for trans and gender nonconforming people.

Growth and Formalization (2006-2021)

  • Community-Based Work:

The organization developed community-led peer groups, youth gatherings, and family support programs, fostering connection and resilience.

  • Serving Western MA:

While rooted in Western Massachusetts, particularly Hampshire and Berkshire counties, its reach extends to people across the entire state.

  • Becoming a 501(c)(3):

After 15 years of operating as a volunteer organization, Translate Gender formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2021 to strengthen and expand its programs and community impact.
