Translate Gender has a working Board — in other words, a Board that actively works on projects and operations, rather than just providing strategic oversight. Because Translate Gender has such a small (but mighty!) staff team, the Board supports the day-to-day work as well as guiding the future of the organization. In addition to governance and strategic planning, Board members take a hands-on role in things like:
Operations → project management, data administration, website maintenance, marketing and communications
Budgeting & Finance → creating and managing budgets, expense tracking, financial planning and reporting
Fundraising → planning and overseeing online campaigns, soliciting gifts, building and managing community and donor relationships
Programs & Events → supporting program development, helping with event logistics, facilitating programs and gatherings, representing Translate Gender at in-person events
Community Engagement → participate in community outreach, build and maintain relationships with other community members and organizations, fostering partnerships, and representing Translate Gender at community events and gatherings

Board members sign on for a two-year term, running January to December. During that time, Board members are expected to:
Attend one virtual meeting each month. Meetings are about two hours long, and are usually held on a weeknight. Scheduling is done at the beginning of each year to ensure everyone can attend.
Read and respond to emails from Translate Gender team or Board members. This includes reviewing meeting agendas, staying on top of organizational updates and community needs, and responding to requests for availability, project support, and decision-making input.
Work on various Translate Gender projects throughout the year, such as fundraising campaigns, event planning, and program development.
Represent Translate Gender at in-person events when needed. This includes things like tabling at Pride events, helping with logistics at the Translate Gender’s annual Trans Day of Visibility Arts & Resource Fair, attending other organizations’ gatherings in a solidarity and support role, etc.*
*Translate Gender will never ask a Board member to attend an event where accessibility is a concern.

No! Wealth is not a condition of Board membership in any way. While Board members are required to support fundraising efforts throughout the year, that can take many forms beyond making a personal donation:
Planning, organizing, and building online fundraising campaigns
Planning and organizing online or in-person fundraising events
Writing, editing, and sending fundraising emails
Sharing fundraising campaigns on social media
Asking individuals in your network to donate at a level that is meaningful for them
Making thank-you calls to campaign donors
Sending hand-written thank-you notes to campaign donors

No! Nonprofit or board experience is definitely a plus, but not at all required.

No! As long as you care about trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive youth here in Western MA, you are welcome to apply.
